Notes: Weekly. Monday nights at 9:00 PM.
Topic This Week: NET OPERATIONS
Topic Summary: We practice net protocol every week, and normally make it look easy and intuitive. That's good, but net protocol is actually deliberately designed to accomplish clarity, brevity, and legality. We'll take a close look at good, clean, clear protocol, starting with the role of Net Control.
Rick, W7STS, will be our Net Control.

Notes: Weekly. Monday nights at 9:00 PM.
Topic This Week: GUARD CHANNEL OPERATIONS
Topic Summary: When you have a cool dual-band radio, one useful configuration is to listen to your favorite repeater on one side and a standard simplex channel on the other. It's really handy to have a simplex channel that you and your friends monitor and can expect to find one another when you're nearby.

10/10/2009 - CACTUS CHA-CHA
WHITE TANKS MOUNTAIN PARK - CLOSED
Notes: 6/29/09 - EVENT DATE CONFIRMED WITH RACE DIRECTOR.
CLOSED FOR SIGN-UPS UNTIL EARLY AUGUST 2009. MARK YOUR CALENDAR AND WATCH FOR AN E-MAIL NOTICE ON AZHAMSERVE THAT IT'S BEEN OPENED.
Goofy name. Easy event. Think "mini Highline Trail".
Saturday morning. 6AM to 11AM. Foot race over established mountain bike trails. A 3-mile and a 7-mile course. Only 3 aid stations. Expecting 350 runners, total. Low-key radio traffic expected.
A good event for beginners.
The challenge is the route - bicycle or 4WD access through low tree branches, only. Hams will be shuttled onto the route if they don't want to "Arizona pinstripe" their vehicles. That means battery-powered portable and HT radios... no mobiles except rugged 4WD's.
Because we're in the RF shadow beneath White Tanks Mtn, we'll use simplex primarily.
Need 8 hams with 2m/70cm FM portable and HT radios. Batteries for 5 hours. Two or three hams on mountain bikes would help, too.

FRIDAY NIGHT CAMPING
Several of us enjoy spending the night at the staging site before the event. Good fellowship, cool breezes, stars, quiet, and the chance to "sleep in" until 5:00 a.m. with no bleary-eyed, pre-dawn driving! Consider joining us.

Hams man water stops, key intersections, and patrol on bicycle. We need 16~21 hams with 2m and 70cm capabilities. One ham needs to bring a cross-band repeater to help cover the repeater shadows in the Park.
Last year, we carried on our tradition of going out to lunch together afterwards. Optional.
IF YOU ARE ABLE TO PROVIDE BICYCLE PATROL, PLEASE DROP AN EMAIL TO ED OR MIKE (OR BOTH).

CONGRESS, AZ - CLOSED
Notes: CLOSED FOR SIGN-UPS UNTIL JULY 2009.

Hams provide communications at rest/sag sites, watch for safety issues, track the lead and tail riders, and monitor key intersections.
We need 5~10 hams with 2m and 70cm mobile or portable capabilities at 50 watts and significant antennas. Repeater coverage will be spotty in places.

Notes: **Watch for this even to open in August**This event has a new start time of 7:00 AM. Great for the beginner and experienced radio operator. If you have worked it before here is your chance to work this event at the Phoenix Zoo and Desert Botanical Gardens.
11/22/2009 - IRONAMAN ARIZONA
TEMPE TOWN LAKE - CLOSED
Notes: November is a busy month in 2009, and the Ironman will be November 22nd. The Ironman is an extreme triathlon, a 2 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and a full marathon!
The Ironman is a extreme ham event too, it's an 18 hour long event, and we have had to break the event in to shifts.
On the Bike aid side, we have stations open from 6am - close (as late as 5:30pm)
Run Aids are in two shifts, 10-7pm and 6pm-close (about 1am).
The Net Control and Command team are open from 6am-1pm, Noon-7pm, and 6pm to close.
I expect to need about 40-50 hams for this event. The Tuesday following, we will treated to a Volunteer dinner complete with raffle prizes and a look at the event on the big screen.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
12/13/2009 - FIESTA BOWL HALF MARATHON
SCOTTSDALE - CLOSED
Notes: WILL OPEN FOR SIGN-UPS IN OCTOBER 2009.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR.
Sunday morning, 6:15 - 11:30am. A 12-1/2 mile foot race and a 5K fun run in Scottsdale on a cool Sunday morning. Expect 1700 pairs of pounding Pumas. This event is put on by Race Place, the same guys who host the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in January. Think of this as a shakedown cruise for that thundering stampede.
Hams man aid stations, key intersections, mobile positions, liaisons to the host organization, and baby-sit race clock displays at every mile.
We need 25 hams with 2m and 70cm FM portable and mobile capabilities and a willingness to serve. We need 2-3 hams on bicycles, too. We have 1~2 ride-along positions with medics.
This is a good opportunity for beginner and intermediate hams in public service communications.
Coordinator: Mike Pulley, WB4ZKA, (480) 917-3043, Mike.J.Pulley@cox.net
01/17/2010 - ROCK N ROLL AZ
PHOENIX, SCOTTSDALE, TEMPE - CLOSED
Notes: Imagine 35000 crazed runners, high on Mt. Dew and rock and roll adrenaline, pouring through Tempe streets like a river of humanity. That's this event. Everyone knows that the same 3 Ethiopians will win each year, but the masses still come from around the world for this major qualifying event. Hams manage the event clocks at each of the 26 miles and a few more traditional duties. We need 40 hams with 2m and 440MHz FM capabilities. This event is a traditional favorite with some hams because the route runs right past their front yards. Net activity can be busy or boring... a good candidate for someone with intermediate experience or above in public service events.
See www.rnraz.com for other event details.
01/30/2010 - LONDONS RUN
QUEEN CREEK - CLOSED
Notes: If your heartstrings aren't tied down tight, skip over the following paragraph.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What's the hardest department in the hospital? It's not the ER, not the ICU, not even the cancer ward. It's pediatric oncology... the children's cancer ward. In 2005, a courageous, six-year-old, Queen Creek girl, London Solomon, battled and lost to leukemia. Friends and neighbors put on a fund-raiser event to benefit London's family . London is gone, but the event carries on today, raising money in London's name for children's cancer charities. Every event we support is worthwhile, but this cause is especially worthy. Childhood cancer are two words that should never appear in the same sentence.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome back, those of you who took the shortcut. Let's get down to business.
We have a new event on the MCECG calendar -- London's Run on Saturday morning, 31 January. We need 10~15 hams. It's on short notice, but go to www.MCECG.net and sign up for this event if it fits your schedule.
It's a half marathon (13 miles) and a 10km (6.2 miles) run. There's an equestrian London's Ride, too, but it's not clear what our participation will be with it.
Expect to need 10-15 hams for this event.
Estimating 6:30 am start time.

02/07/2010 - RUNNER'S DEN ROAD CLASSIC
PARADISE VALLEY MALL, SCOTTSDALE - CLOSED
Notes: THIS EVENT IS CLOSED TO SIGN-UPS UNTIL MID-DECEMBER 2009. MARK YOUR CALENDAR AND WATCH FOR AN E-MAIL ON THE AZHAMSERVE LIST ANNOUNCING THAT IT'S OPEN.
A 10km (6.2 mile) fun run on a cool Sunday morning starting and ending at Paradise Valley Mall. This event attracts mom, pop, and the kids citizen runners, so it will mostly be a liesurly event for us. This is a good event for first-time hams to public service. We will finish in time for Sunday brunch.
Hams man aid stations, course turning points, mobile positions, and liaisons to the host organization and law enforcement.
We need 16 hams with 2m and 70cm FM portable and mobile capabilities and a willingness to serve. A bicycle ham would be useful, too.

05/15/2010 - AZ EMERGENCY NET - MARICOPA PICNIC
PAYSON, HOUSTON MESA CAMPGROUND - CLOSED
Notes: Saturday. Same weekend as Dayton. Much cheaper!
Much the same as previous years. See below. This year, though, we've reserved the FOX 2 Group site, across Houston Mesa Road from the campground we've used before.
Bring your portable radio station and set it up. Big, wide area for stations. Treat it like a practice run Field Day. We might even have a "battle of the stations" to see who has the most capable field station.
We work, train, and learn all year. It's time to rest, visit, and eat burned food in the tall, cool pines of Beautiful Payson.
Details to follow, but it looks something like this...
a. Those who can, go up Friday afternoon and camp overnight.
b. Everyone else drives up Saturday morning for a mid-day picnic.
c. Everyone brings meat for themselves and a dish or other contribution to share. A potluck affair.
d. Cooking fires and stoves will be provided.
e. Bring your show-and-tell items AND PORTABLE STATIONS TO PUT ON THE AIR.
f. Talk. Eat. Play with radios. Repeat.
